Diablo 4 players could experience potential server hiccups on release day

Image
Blizzard has said servers "might be a little bumpy on the first day" of Diablo 4's release. This is according to the game's general manager Rod Fergusson, who told GamesRadar that despite being prepared, "never say never" when it comes to server stability. This is despite the studio's work since the open betas, but because millions of people could be banging on the doors of Sanctuary, folks should be prepared for potential hiccups. The Street Fighter 6 wifi wars have begun

Image
The Street Fighter 6 community are throwing punches at eachother online following the revelation that wifi indicators will appear next to players heading into online lobbies. With this out info out in the world, debate surrounding the merits of wired vs wireless connections has sprung up yet again. It's an argument that has been raging for years now, born thanks to the importance of a stable connection in the genre back when the netcode wasn't nearly as good as it is these days. Back then, a wireless connection would result in unplayable matches. In Street Fighter 6, the netcode is good enough so that wifi warriors can play just fine, but the stigma still remains. "This is discrimination on the highest level," writes Pemo on Twitter , in response to a tournament organiser stating that wifi players will be kicked from SF6 tournaments he runs. "You're just going to alienate people from playing with others? Idk what you senile boomers have against technology...

We should all be very thankful we never got a rumoured Elden Ring season pass

Image
First reported by the folk over at Twisted Voxel , a rumour surrounding the long-awaited Elden Ring DLC has emerged. Supposedly, the Elden Ring DLC revealed on Twitter earlier this year – Shadow of the Erdtree – was to initially launch as a a ‘season pass’ comprised of two DLCs . The season pass concept was reportedly scrapped by FromSoftware, which favoured a larger, single expansion in the form of Shadow of the Erdtree. We also got a small content update in the form of the PvP-focused colosseums update that landed late last year, too. The information about this aborted season pass comes from Discord (via Twisted Voxel), of all places, but it does come from Lance McDonald, who is no stranger to FromSoftware. You may recognise the name from a massive PT file mining operation , or perhaps as the guy that figured out how to make Bloodborne even better . Diablo 4 review: The road to hell is paved with reinventions

Image
Blood! Loot! Numbers! Cows! Diabo is a series with a storied legacy, built on strong pillars that have held up the ARPG classic for years now. It's a name that still holds some well-deserved clout, even if Diablo Immortal (and, to a lesser degree, Diablo 3) soured that reputation in the minds of fans. With Diablo 4 almost here, Activision Blizzard has a chance to get your mind off stolen breastmilk, cancelled PvE modes, union busting and struggling acquisitions with a good ol' fashioned bloody brawl. Diablo 4 is a game that, from the get-go, was clearly meant to harken back to the Diablo 2 era: dark and dire, unafraid to throw the grim reality of a demonic invasion around, and keen to splatter heavy religious overtones across your face. Diablo 3, while good, always felt more like a fantastical epic. Diablo 4 nails a return to grisly, Hadean form – but, perhaps fittingly, it is betrayed. Betrayed by puzzling design decisions, betrayed by bugs, betrayed by issues that rang...

Silent Hill: Ascension does not look like the game we’ve been holding out for

Image
Silent Hill: Ascension has revealed a brand new trailer, giving us a look at exactly what this live gameplay experience will entail. And it doesn’t look like the game we’ve been holding out for. For multiple reasons. The first being that, well, Ascension isn’t going to be a standard game. The PR has been very clear with us about this – Silent Hill: Ascension will take the form of 'an interactive streaming series’ in which the viewers decide the fate of the characters, together, by bidding on them. Per the PR, "no one is playing a character" – so there is no James Sunderland-type agency here. Does this sound eerily like a hobbled version of Supermassive Games’ Until Dawn and The Quarry ? Yes. You’re not wrong for thinking that, either. With some caveats. If someone presented me the trailer for Ascension with no prior context or branding, I would’ve honestly mistaken this trailer for another Supermassive endeavour, perhaps cut through with a little Netflix Bandersnatc...

Tekken 8 beta coming soon? It sure looks like it

Image
A Tekken 8 beta has been stealthily added to Steam today, hinting towards a closed network test becoming available in the near future. This was discovered on SteamDB , a website that monitors and tracks updates to the popular PC storefront. Tekken 8 has been playable in offline closed alpha tests at real-world tournaments this year, including Evo Japan in March and Combo Breaker over the weekend. However, it has yet to be playable to the general public around the world, and certainly not online. Looking at the assets uploaded alongside the Steam beta, you can clearly see the letters 'CNT'. This likely stands for some variation of 'closed network test', a common practice for modern fighting game developers to test the online infrastructure of their titles ahead of release with a limited player pool of global fighters. It's also a good way of discovering busted combos or other bugs, as hordes of passionate players will be pulling apart the game in an attempt to di...

Street Fighter 6 review: one of the best fighting game packages of all time

Image
In gaming, as in any art, you sometimes have to learn to take the rough with the smooth. No artist, director, studio, production house, or franchise is infallible. But the failures aren’t always just missteps. Sometimes, they’re stepping stones on the route to triumph. This happens in all mediums, but I think we see more of it in games. This is the story of Final Fantasy 14 to A Realm Reborn, of the Wii U to the Switch – and of Street Fighter 5 to Street Fighter 6 . A greatly troubled game at launch that took years to rescue, the fifth Street Fighter game now has its real legacy: training Capcom in what it needed to do to make a modern fighter that slaps harder than E. Honda – at launch. Or to put it another way: Street Fighter 6 isn’t just the best package of content ever in the franchise’s history – it might be the best ever in the history of the genre. Remedy might not want to release Alan Wake 2 physically, but THQ Nordic does

Image
Following the news that Remedy Entertainment will not be releasing Alan Wake 2 physically, THQ Nordic has offered to do it instead. Last week, following the first gameplay trailer for Alan Wake 2 , developer Remedy released an FAQ where it stated that the upcoming sequel would be receiving a digital only release . This obviously made for a slightly controversial statement, given that physical media is very important for the sake of preservation. In response, video game publisher THQ Nordic has offered to do a physical release of the game, noting how it technically handled the physical release on PC back when the first game was released (it should be noted that this would have been via the original THQ, which no longer exists). "I mean… we did the disc version of Alan Wake for PC back in the day [in case you missed it]," reads a tweet from the THQ Nordic Twitter account, rounding things off with a sly winky face. "And just because ONE person (or company) does not lo...

Knights of the Old Republic Remake might not be dead yet, according to a recent financial report

Image
The Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake is in an uncertain state right now, but a recent report does at least suggest it's still in development. It's safe to say that since its announcement in 2021 , things haven't been sounding too good for the remake of Knights of the Old Republic. A report last year claimed that development had ceased due to multiple key members of staff being fired from the developer, Aspyr. Now, as first reported by Insider Gaming (thanks PCGamer ), the full year report from Embracer Group seems to confirm that Knights of the Old Republic is still in development, even if that doesn't mean much for how far along it might be. The project is listed as under active development in the section titled "Announced PC/ Console Releases as of May 24, 2023," where a number of other upcoming titles are listed. There's not really much else about the game in there, other than the fact it's coming to PC and PS5 (which we already ...

Yakuza devs announce a summer showcase, will probably feature Like a Dragon 8

Image
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio , the team behind the series formerly known as Yakuza , has announced it will be hosting a showcase next month. If you've been looking to get your Yakuza fix, or I guess I should say Like a Dragon fix, good news: Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has just announced its RGG Summit for Summer 2023. The developer announced the live stream on its official Twitter account, where it shared you'll be able to check out the stream June 16. There is a slight catch for UK viewers, though, as it'll be streaming at 4am our time, or midday in Japan time (for those over in the states, it'll technically take place on June 15, 11pm ET/ 8pm PT). The announcement didn't make any mention of what exactly we can expect to see during the live stream, but it's almost certainly a safe bet there will be something Like a Dragon shown off. At the previous showcase last year, the studio formally revealed Yakuza 8 as Like a Dragon 8, as well as Like a Dragon Gaiden, which featur...

PinCool is a new studio from a former Dragon Quest producer and NetEase

Image
NetEase Games has announced a new studio called PinCool , led by former longtime Dragon Quest franchise producer Ryutaro Ichimura. Announced today, May 29, the new studio is based in Tokyo, with a main focus on developing video games, but will also plan on producing a range of types of interactive entertainment. The studio is led by Ichimura, who has produced games like Dragon Quest 8 and 9, and has been in the games industry for more than 20 years. Ichimura was also involved with the development of Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai, the anime adaptation of the long running video game series. Over on PinCool's website , Ichimura explained the origin of the name, writing, "The company name comes from the Japanese phrase 'pin to kuru,' expressing when an idea clicks. The English name 'PinCool' is pronounced similarly and is stylized to include the English word 'cool' as well." Read more from VG247 Latest Articles Feed https://ift.tt/pm2gAIM ...

System Shock Remake review: A foundation for the new generation of immersive sims

Image
It’s difficult to imagine a more daunting proposition for a remake than the original System Shock . It’s arguably the game that truly launched the greatest boom of immersive sims in history – a genre whose fans are notoriously demanding, despite never having really been able to come up with a universally agreed definition of what an 'immersive sim' even is. It’s a genre of such a specific time and place, games that possess intrinsic vibes of fat chunky keyboards, bulky cardboard boxes and 640x480 CRT screens. How do you channel that in an era of ultrawide monitors and digital only games? Does anybody even want it? Warren Spector himself, one of the key creative figures in the heyday of PC games about rifling through shelves and reading emails, couldn’t get a tumultuous System Shock 3 out the door https://ift.tt/E2pSkUG before the whole endeavour imploded. This isn’t developer Nightdive Studios first wrangle with the licence – after acquiring the IP in 2015, they promptly re...

Final Fantasy 16 takes an odd bit of inspiration from Marvel vs. Capcom 2

Image
While it's obvious that Devil May Cry has had a big influence on Final Fantasy 16 , it seems that Marvel vs. Capcom 2 was a source of inspiration too. In just a few days, we'll be in the launch month for Final Fantasy 16, as we were reminded by in the recent launch trailer shown off at the PlayStation Showcase . Gameplay wise it's looking like it's obviously staying within the realm of real time action combat, much like its predecessor 15, and with Ryota Suzuki, designer of Devil May Cry 5, it's clear to see what kind of style of combat the game is going for. Interestingly, though, according to Suzuki, the game is also inspired by one particular feature of another game Suzuki worked on: specifically, the assist feature in Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Suzuki recently spoke with Game Informer , where he shared how exactly Marvel vs. Capcom was an influence on Final Fantasy 16. "There’s actually something from Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 that we took and put into Final Fantas...

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are definitely getting Pokemon Home connectivity next week

Image
After a false start from The Pokemon Company , it has now been confirmed that Pokemon Home will be receiving Pokemon Scarlet and Violet compatibility next week. Last week, the official Pokemon Twitter account shared that Pokemon Home version 3.0 would be arriving this week, though later went back on that saying it made a mistake as to when the update will be made available. Now, as reported by Serebii , it has been confirmed that the update will in fact arrive next week, May 29. This update is a noticeable one as it means Pokemon Scarlet and Violet players will finally be able to transfer Pokemon from Home into the latest generation of games, and vice versa (though it should be noted that not every Pokemon that exists can be transferred from Home to Scarlet and Violet). The official Pokemon Twitter account shared this news, writing, "Maintenance to update Pokémon Home to version 3.0.0 is scheduled to begin on Monday, 5/29 at 5pm PT. Pokémon Home will not be available during t...

Alan Wake 2 is getting a digital only release to keep the price lower

Image
Alan Wake 2 finally has a release date, but Remedy Entertainment has shared that it will have a digital only release. Earlier this week, Remedy Entertainment finally shared a proper look at the upcoming survival horror game Alan Wake 2, the long awaited followup to the 2010 original. It's looking incredibly good so far, but for the physical collectors out there you're going to hit a bit of a snag: according to Remedy itself, a physical release isn't planned at this point in time, apparently because this means it can keep the cost of the game lower. Remedy shared an FAQ shortly after the reveal at the PlayStation showcase going over some of the most pressing questions some of you might have had, as well as some you might not. Pretty early on in the FAQ Remedy wrote that it will be available digitally on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, later explaining why it made this decision. In response to the question "Why is Alan Wake 2 a digital-only release?" Remedy wro...

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum devs apologise for "underwhelming experience"

Image
After lacklustre reviews across the board, Daedalic Entertainment has offered an apology for the performance of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum . As reviews started to come out for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, it quickly became clear that the game wasn't in ship shape. Reviews scored low pretty much across the board, with the game currently sitting at a 36 over on Metacritic . In turn, Daedalic Entertainment has offered an apology to players of the game, where it also promised that patches and improvements are on the way. "We would like to sincerely apologise for the underwhelming experience many of you have had with The Lord of the Rings: Gollum upon its release," opens the statement. "We acknowledge and deeply regret that the game did not meet the expectations we set for ourselves or for our dedicated community. Please accept our sincere apologies for any disappointment this may have caused." Read more from VG247 Latest Articles Feed https://ift.tt/6BL...

Multiple Silent Hill projects are getting trailers "really soon," claims leaker

Image
Silent Hill rumours are a dime a dozen, but this current one is claiming we'll be seeing more trailers for multiple projects "really soon." If you weren't surprised by the announcement of the Silent Hill 2 remake last year, you're not alone, because it had been heavily rumoured and even leaked long before that official reveal. Some of the other Silent Hill announcements did offer some surprises, but we haven't heard anything about them since. Now, known leaker Dusk Golem (who had shared leaks about the series refresh prior to the reveal from Konami) is claiming that we should expect at least one trailer for one of the Silent Hill projects "before June." "I don't know the exact date for everything," Dusk Golem explained in The Snitch's Discord channel (The Snitch, for those unaware, being another leaker providing accurate but vague leaks). "But I'll just say there's a new SH2R, [Townfall] & Ascension trailer rea...

Bungie reportedly expressed concerns over how engaging The Last of Us multiplayer project was

Image
Naughty Dog recently shared that its multiplayer The Last of Us game needed "more time," but a new report claims this happened at the suggestion of Bungie. A multiplayer spinoff of The Last of Us has been in the works for a while now , with Naughty Dog confirming that it would be a stand-alone title last June. We haven't heard much about it since then, and Naughty Dog shared earlier this week that'll be a while longer before we hear anything more. In the style of those now classic apology/ delay announcement posts, the developer sort of leaned towards the latter in a recent Twitter post. "We know many of you have been looking forward to hearing more about our The Last of Us multiplayer game," opens the statement. "We're incredibly proud of the job our studio has done thus far, but as development has continued, we've realised what is best for the game is to give it more time. Our team will continue to work on the project, as well as our oth...

What are you playing this weekend?

Image
It's Memorial Day weekend in the US, which means folks in the States get an extra day to do nothing if the mood strikes them. Decoration Day, as it was originally called, was set aside after the Civil War ended to honor soldiers who died. Over the years, it turned into Memorial Day, a now Federal holiday. Basically, it's a day we celebrate fallen members of the military. But it's not a totally solemn weekend. Many people also celebrate by having cookouts and other get-togethers. It is also the weekend when many pools open up for the summer, despite it still being a little chilly, if you ask me. Read more from VG247 Latest Articles Feed https://ift.tt/zmlN8vi via IFTTT

Harbour will be taking the role of Detective Edward Carnby, while Comer will be taking the reigns of Emily Hartwood. For those who don't know, Alone in the Dark was the original survivial horror title before better known genre juggernauts like Resident Evil came in and stole everyone's hearts. Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is great, but I hope the next game is nothing like it

Image
It's kind of difficult to accurately describe how impressive a game The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom actually is. Personally I find it increasingly rare that I actually play a triple-A game that delivers on the promise of its scope, but Nintendo's latest outing has successfully done so. There is just… so much to do, and so much of it is worth doing. Side quests feel like worthwhile endeavours rather than meandering distractions, the new abilities are busted beyond belief, and the main story itself hooked me quickly. Obviously, there's an easy argument to be made that this is the game of the year. But I just hope that whatever Zelda game Nintendo makes next, it's nothing like Tears of the Kingdom. Zelda is a bit of an odd series. It is somewhat of an iterative franchise, but not as big a one as its cousin Mario, which constantly strives to make moving in a 3D space more interesting – or at the very least radically different – than the last one. For the most ...

Xbox branded "cheeky" as it highlights 12 PlayStation Showcase titles coming to Xbox

It was a big night for PlayStation last night, huh? Metal Gear Solid , more Metal Gear Solid , cyberpunk-at-home sequel Ghostrunner 2 , a release date for Assassin's Creed Mirage, Alan Wake 2 showing a descent into madness, and a massive, unexpected look at the exciting Dragon's Dogma 2 . Given this was a massive Sony showcase (and the first one since 2021, no less), you'd be forgiven for thinking all of these games were PlayStation exclusives – or, at least, would come to the PS5 with special features or something. Alas, that's not the case. As pointed out in a cheeky tweet that flew out of the Xbox socials the second the showcase was over, 12 of the games included in the showcase will be coming to Xbox platforms, as well as PlayStation or PC. Marathon is Bungie's first PS5 and PC PlayStation Studios game, and its first new game since Destiny

Image
It's been a long time coming, but we've finally got word on what Bungie has been cooking up over the past few years. After being committed to the Destiny salt mines for the better part of a decade, the (original) Halo developer has finally unveiled its first new project in years: Marathon . But, hang on, hasn't Bungie made a Marathon game before? Yes. Marathon was a first-person shooter video game developed and published by Bungie way back in the hazy Mac gaming years (yes, really) of December 1994. The game takes place several centuries into the future in outer space, and was very well known for being quite fiendish in its puzzles and unique, cerebral take on combat. It's set one year after Ghostrunner, and stars cyber ninja protagonist Jack emerging from the deathtrap of Dharma Tower for the first time to explore the sprawling wasteland beyond. The studio notes that the 'fast-paced-push-forward combat' of the original game is intact and amped up for this release, and that the challenging gameplay present in the original title makes a welcome return, too.
