Resident Evil producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi has started a new studio that is building a new IP that aims to "impress the whole world." NetEase Games announced that it has opened a new development shop in Japan called GPTRACK50 that hopes to create "entertainment concepts" that appeal globally. Kobayashi is also known for producing games in Capcom franchises such as Devil May Cry and Dragon's Dogma. The new studio will be staffed by "experienced professionals" from across gaming, film, and TV. NetEase said its goal is to build "original IPs that would impress the whole world." "The studio strives to build original game contents and to broaden the spectrum from just games to film and entertainment series," the company said. Takashi Iizuka, head of Sonic Team , wants you to know that Sonic Frontiers "isn't similar at all," to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild . It would be very fair to take a look at the upcoming Sonic Frontiers and think, 'hey, this is giving Breath of the Wild vibes.' Admittedly it's a bit of a surface level, kind of reductive reaction, but like, come on, there definitely was some influence, right? Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II was just released on Friday, and it had a massive launch on PlayStation. The company has announced that Modern Warfare II has become the "biggest PlayStation Store launch" of all time for the Call of Duty series. This includes both preorders and day-one sales, Sony said. Sony did not provide a specific sales number for Modern Warfare II on PlayStation, however. The game is seemingly performing well on other platforms, too (of course), as Modern Warfare II ranks No. 1 on the Xbox best-seller list and is topping the charts on PC via Steam as well . Video game sales across the industry are continuing to trend toward digital and away from physical, so it makes logical sense that Modern Warfare II would have set this digital PlayStation Store record. Microsoft hasn't had a very busy year when it comes to first-party releases, but Xbox users can expect 2023 to be a big year for the console and the brand, according to Phil Spencer. In an interview on the Same Brain videocast, Microsoft's head of gaming admitted that while 2022 had been a mostly quiet year, 2023 is shaping up to be a blockbuster season for Xbox. Here's a sentence I would have never predicted writing, even about a week ago: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 fans are spending up to, and over, £30 on codes for a Burger King skin. A quick look at eBay will show you that people are listing codes that have been picked up from Burger King, for a limited-time in-game cosmetic, and the going rate is often over £30. Some are higher – there's demand for the supply, after all – and some are even charging extra for postage. Which is... interesting... given that you only need to enter the code into your console or PC to redeem it. It's no secret that Call of Duty is one of the best-selling franchises of all time. The series, at the last official count, has sold well over 425 million units – meaning it's only really outpaced by the likes of Mario, Tetris and Pokemon in the great halls of all-time video game sales. As reported by Eurogamer , in the company's latest report , it noted that it is "striving to create a 'Super Game,' a major title that scales globally," though didn't expand upon what this actually means. To the befuddlement of many, Henry Cavill is no longer playing Geralt in Netflix's Witcher series, with Liam Hemsworth taking over the role. The good news (depending on how strongly you feel about this recasting) is that the show will return for a fourth season, though Cavill won't be coming back for it. Overwatch 2 will actually receive some balance changes before the second season, despite what Blizzard originally said. Earlier this month Blizzard told us that we wouldn't be seeing any hero changes until Season 2 . Well, that isn't true any more, as a blog post from community manager AndyB on the Overwatch forums informed us that we'd see changes to a number of characters as early as November 15, including D.Va, Genji, Sombra, Kiriko, and probably the best tank in the game right now Zarya. Unfortunately for Genji mains, you'll just be seeing some nerfs. His maximum ammo is being reduced from 30 to 24, and his shuriken damage is being reduced from 29 to 27. These changes to try and make Genji more in line with other flanking damage heroes, as he's a character that benefited a lot from the move to 5v5. In SEGA's latest financial report, the company shared a rather remarkable figure for its Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. According to the company , the series has sold over 1.5 billion copies worldwide. The figure spans both full games and free-to-play titles as of March 2022 (thanks, GI.biz ). The figure will surely go up once Sonic Frontiers is released, and the company is also working on several Sonic IP projects for the fiscal year ending March 2024 and beyond. First reported by Axios , and according to a new financial filing , Microsoft has failed to reach its annual, internal growth target for the popular subscription service, Xbox Game Pass. It’s also said that this is the only metric tied to CEO Satya Nadella’s pay, which is interesting, to say the least. This is the second year running in which Microsoft has fallen short of its target. The company initially planned for a 72.8% growth rate for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2022. However, Microsoft was only able to achieve a 28% growth rate instead. Microsoft did exceed the planned growth rate in 2020, but 2021 and 2022 have been less than successful when it comes to hitting its target for the service. Deep Rock Galactic Season 3 is just around the corner, scheduled to kick off this November. The new season adds biome-altering special effects to Hoxxes IV, as well as brand-new grenades and a new activity waiting to be discovered down within the monster-filled mines. Ahead of the start of Season 3, I played through an instance of the new activity, which incorporates two stages. The first stage sees you clearing Rockpox nests, while the second has you mining the Rockpox-infested asteroids that are bringing the contagion to the planet. Between the two, I most enjoyed the former, where you need to work with your team to track down and then clear out nests of Glyphid Grunts and Glyphid Praetorian that have been infected with the Rockpox contagion. The disease creates bulbous growths on the creatures--these are the only weak points on their otherwise impenetrable outer shells. According to Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer, Xbox Game Pass is profitable already as a business, though the executive did not share any other details about the economics of the service or the accounting for it. Speaking at The Wall Street Journal's Tech Live event attended by The Verge , Spencer said Game Pass is "profitable for us," adding that Game Pass makes up 10-15% of the Xbox content and services revenue. Zorua and its evolution Zoroark were meant to have made their debuts in Pokemon Go this past week, as part of the game's ongoing Halloween events, however the trickster Pokemon has been pulled--or at least delayed, due to a bug. In keeping with its nature as a trickster Pokemon, Niantic had planned a unique event for Zorua's debut , where the Pokemon would appear on the map in the form of the player's buddy Pokemon, only revealing itself as Zorua when caught. The event seemed to run as intended for players in New Zealand, the first time zone to receive Pokemon Go events, however a second spawn didn't occur as planned, and players in Australia saw no sign of Zorua. According to a series of tweets by Niantic Support, the event was bugged, causing caught Zorua to take on the stats--including height, CP, and attacks--of the buddy Pokemon that was originally caught. Microsoft has announced its latest earnings results, and this includes reporting on how the Xbox business specifically is performing. The Xbox division saw a 4% overall increase to revenue, reaching $3.61 billion, Windows Central reported . According to DomsPlaying on Twitter , this is a new all-time record for revenue in a Q1 period (Microsoft's Q1 ended September 30, 2022) for Xbox, dating back to the inception of Xbox more than two decades ago. Xbox hardware saw a 13% increase in revenue thanks to ongoing sales of Xbox consoles and accessories. Xbox content and services, however, saw a decline of 3% in revenue. Microsoft said the declines were attributed, in part, to lower first-party and third-party game sales. Microsoft also reported "lower engagement hours" during the period. Halloween is right around the corner, and I don’t know about any of you, but it’s definitely one of my favourite holidays of the year. Mainly because, unlike Christmas (in which I rarely get to relax, let alone boot up a game), it’s the perfect excuse for me to kick back and chill out with my favourite genre of game, and that’s horror. Admittedly, I’ve jumped on the Halloween bandwagon rather late this year. I’ve failed to decorate my flat with cardboard bats and fake cobwebs, and I’m still yet to go and acquire candy for any trick-or-treaters. While Dying Light 2's zombie-filled open world already feels ready for the spooky season, developer Techland has announced a week-long Halloween event to bring even more seasonal treats. Capcom has finally announced the release dates for the Resident Evil 2, 3 , and 7 Nintendo Switch ports, and they'll be here just in time for the holiday season. We already knew that the Nintendo Switch version of Resident Evil Village would be coming next week , October 28, but dates hadn't yet been locked in for the other Resi titles coming to the platform. As part of this week's Resident Evil Showcase , Capcom confirmed that we'll be able to play Resident Evil 2 on Switch November 11, Resident Evil 3 is arriving November 18, and Resident Evil 7 is coming a month later on December 16. It should be noted that like many intensive games, these particular ports will be cloud only, so make sure you have a good internet connection before you think about picking up these particular titles. When you think of Resident Evil 4 , one of the first things to come to mind is probably those chainsaw wielding zombies with burlap potato sacks over their faces. They were pretty scary, especially when you learnt that it only takes one full sweep with that chainsaw to kill Leon Kennedy off. Recently, I sat down with the Resident Evil 4 Remake . I didn’t get to spend too long with the game, but I did find myself getting up close and personal with the chainsaw man again. Stepping into that Spanish village all over again, watching Los Ganados pledge their lives to Los Illuminados, I knew it was a matter of time before I came face to face with one of the many chainsaw men. I was right, and in the same way that Leon Kennedy looks even more handsome in this remake, the chainsaw man I met up with is a lot more terrifying.
