Prey Director Says Bethesda Forced Arkane To Use That Name, Calls Decision A "Gross" Mistake

When Arkane Studios' Prey was first announced, it was met with confusion over whether the game was a follow-up to 2006's Prey , a critically-acclaimed first-person shooter developed by Human Head Studios. After it was revealed that the two games shared no connection, some speculated as to why Arkane would choose to title its upcoming game the same name. However, as revealed by former Arkane director Raphaël Colantonio, the development studio had no say in the matter. As reported by Kotaku , Colantonio has recently appeared on a handful of podcasts discussing the making of Prey--and his complete disdain for the name Bethesda reportedly "forced" Arkane to use. In the latest episode of the AIAS Game Maker's Notebook podcast , Colantonio elaborated on the experience: "I did not want to call this game Prey," Colantonio told AIAS. "And I had to say I wanted to anyway in front of journalists. I hate to lie… It felt bad to support a message I did not wan...

Konami Confirms New Game From Famous Series Will Be Announced At TGS

Konami has announced that it will reveal a new game related to one of its classic franchises next month at the Tokyo Game Show. Voice actor Yuki Kaji will be on stage to "represent the fans" of the game, which Konami describes as being linked to a "world-famous" series. According to VGC 's sources, Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid, and Castlevania fans shouldn't get too excited about the reveal as the new game is reportedly related to a smaller project that the company has lined up. It's rumored that Konami does have revivals planned for some of its biggest IPs, including a Silent Hill 2 remake being helmed by Bloober Team and remasters of classic Metal Gear Solid games. Bloober confirmed in October 2021 that it was working on two "AAA" projects that have yet to be officially revealed, and the company has signed a deal with Konami for a new project . Other rumors have pointed to multiple Silent Hill games being in development, including a p...

World of Warcraft Lich King Classic's pre-patch is out, ready to do bad DPS again 14 years later?

Image
Wrath of the Lich King is nearly back in Classic World of Warcraft, thanks to the new expansion pre-patch released to the classic servers. This is big news for the old, the nostalgic, and the “back in my day” crowd, who’ll soon be able to venture back to the frozen wastes of Northrend to take down Arthas all over again. I’m sure you’ll get the mount you always wanted this time, bud. Players can choose to either move onto this wave of new content with their pre-existing characters on Burning Crusade classic servers, or they can hop onto fresh servers to re-level a hero and experience the game with an economy that isn’t totally inflated and loads of guilds actually looking for new members. Wrath of the Lich King is held in high regard in the minds of OG World of Warcraft players, with excellent raids and PvP content while also adding in some quality of life changes that really go a long way in convincing you not to ram your head into your desk — like duel specialisation, a dungeon fi...

These 15 Ubisoft games and DLC will go offline tomorrow

Image
You might remember an article from Ubisoft from a couple of months ago that advised it would be decommissioning the online services for multiple games as of September 1. Well, that time has come, and it's one more day until these 15 Ubisoft titles go offline forever. In the grand world of video games, we're well aware that nothing lasts forever; even though, really, we should be discussing video game preservation more often. Today is the last day that online multiplayer will be available in any of the fifteen titles, but also the final day that you'll be able to play any DLC you own - multiplayer or not. One example pointed out by a Reddit user is that those who bought the expansions for Assassin's Creed 3's 2012 release will no longer be able to access the DLC without buying the remaster of the game, and those with Splinter Cell Blacklist cosmetics will not be able to use them. This marks the first European company to be acquired by Netease, as the company stretches its financial fingers across the world to pluck up studios left and right. With this particular acquisition, the folks at Netease state the studio will “continue to operate independently” as it develops titles across all platforms. The studio will also apparently continue to support and publish third-party developed titles which is great news if you liked the look of Under the Waves — a game first revealed at Gamescom earlier this month which is published by Quantic Dream and developed by another French team at Parallel Studios. 'All-new Mafia project' confirmed to be in development

Image
At long last, it has finally been confirmed that an "all-new" Mafia game is in development. In celebration of the series' 20th anniversary, an in-house interview with Hangar 13 was shared. As of this month, it's been twenty years since the Mafia series made its debut with Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven, and it's certainly come a long way since. In commemoration, general manager Roman Hladík and head of production/media director Tomáš Hřebíček - who have worked on every game in the series - sat down, looked back on Mafia, and shared some dazzling new information with fans. They were also joined by another Hangar 13 game director, Alex Cox, who has been with them since the Mafia 2. Towards the conclusion of the interview, the team were asked what's next for the Mafia franchise, to which Roman Hladík responded, "I'm happy to confirm we've started work on an all-new Mafia project! While it's a few years away and we can't share anything mor...

Xbox Game Pass Friends And Family Branding Seemingly Discovered Online

Branding for the Xbox Game Pass family subscription plan has seemingly leaked, showing off the potential logo for Microsoft's subscription service. It's nothing revolutionary in the graphic design department that Twitter user Aggiornamenti Lumia, but it does suggest that Microsoft's approach to allowing users to share their subscription won't be limited to just their family members. Microsoft began testing out this version of Game Pass in Ireland and Colombia several weeks ago, with the main restriction being that the account could only be shared by members who stayed in the same country. That Game Pass Ultimate preview is priced at around $25 a month (via VGC ), whereas a usual subscription for a single person will set you back $15 every month for access to games on PC, Xbox console, Xbox cloud gaming, and online multiplayer. pic.twitter.com/9K40x15Yhv — Aggiornamenti Lumia (@ALumia_Italia) August 27, 2022 The potential Xbox Game Pass Friends & Family hasn...

PlayStation now has a mobile division, as it acquires Savage Game Studios

Image
PlayStation seems to be pushing towards the mobile market, as it sets up a dedicated mobile division, and acquires a mobile-focused studio. Earlier today (August 29), PlayStation announced that it is acquiring mobile game developer Savage Game Studios. If you haven't heard of it before, that might be because it hasn't actually released a game yet, though its co-founders do include former Zynga, Rovio, and Insomniac staff, so there's plenty of experience in the industry at the very least. On top of that, PlayStation also announced that Savage Game Studios is joining the newly created PlayStation Studios Mobile Division, as sure a sign as any that the company wants to head into the mobile market. The newly created division "will operate independently from our console development and focus on innovative, on-the-go experiences based on new and existing PlayStation IP," as described on the PlayStation Blog announcement post . The Last of Us Part 1 Has Several Innovative Accessibility Features

Like several other PlayStation 5 games, The Last of Us Part 1 will feature a number of accessibility options that include audio descriptions for cinematics, alternative controls, and much more. One of the more interesting features uses the DualSense controller to enhance dialogue. The controller vibrates when a specific line is delivered, thus enabling a deaf player to feel the emphasis during these dialogue sequences and get a sense for how it is spoken. Another fascinating feature is geared toward blind and visually-impaired players, which Naughty Dog calls Enhanced Listen Mode. Using that suite of features, players can scan for enemies, cinematics have audio descriptions, and traversal audio clues help paint a picture of the world around Joel. "To some extent the principles behind accessibility are good universal design principles," game director Matthew Gallant said in a video that highlighted some of the new accessibility options. "Thankfully we're able to thi...

Atomic Heart's combat trailer looks a little Fallout, a little BioShock

Image
Atomic Heart , the first-person-shooter set in an alternate 1950s Soviet Union, received a new combat trailer at Gamescom to show you what you'll be in for. The latest trailer for Atomic Heart shows off some gameplay that looks a little bit Fallout , a little bit Dishonored , and a little bit BioShock , combining to form something that seems like you'll have a lot of options, at least when it comes to shooting at and destroying various types of robots. Gameplay, like many games before it, predominantly consists of shooting at things with a number of guns at your disposal, though sometimes you get to swing a melee weapon and slice robots in half too. Microsoft wants Activision because of mobile gaming opportunities, says Phil Spencer

Image
Xbox boss Phil Spencer recently touched on the reasoning behind the Activision Blizzard acquisition, noting that the mobile market is a big part of why the move took place. The year obviously started with a bang when Microsoft announced it planned to acquire Activision Blizzard , but the reasoning behind it, aside from more money in the long term, wasn't completely clear. But speaking to Bloomberg , Spencer has shed some light, and it seems that having more games on mobile, and a bit more on PC, was the main driving force behind the acquisition. "The biggest gaming platform on the planet is mobile phones," said Spencer. "One and a half billion people play on mobile phones. And I guess, regretfully as Microsoft, it's not a place where we have a native platform. As gaming, coming from console and PC, we don't have a lot of creative capability that has built hit mobile games." Read more from VG247 Latest Articles Feed https://ift.tt/E3QtJPa via IF...

Nintendo reaffirms it has no plans to increase Switch cost following PS5 price hike

Image
After Sony recently announced it is raising the price of the PS5, Nintendo has reaffirmed that it has no plans to do the same with the Switch. Earlier this week, Sony announced the PS5 is getting more expensive pretty much everywhere in the world bar the US, going up by £30 in the UK. In response to that, Microsoft confirmed it wouldn't raise the price of the Xbox Series X or S. Now, in a statement to Eurogamer , Nintendo confirmed that it too has "no plans" to increase the cost of the Switch. The statement reaffirmed comments made by Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa in June at the 82nd annual general meeting of shareholders, saying ""'While we cannot comment on pricing strategies, we currently do not have any plans to change the price of our hardware due to inflation or increased procurement costs in each country. We will determine our future pricing strategies through careful and continued deliberations.'" Read more from VG247 Lates...

Mario Kart: The Agony And The Anguish Of The Blue Shell

Mario Kart is celebrating its 30-year anniversary today, August 27, 2022. Below, we take a look at one of the most controversial power-ups in video games, the infamous Blue Shell. There is no single item in all of video games as hated and feared as Mario Kart's Blue Shell, aka the Spiny Shell. Though it didn't debut with the original game on the Super NES, the item has become a recognizable icon and a part of the series' identity. It is the ultimate equalizer, representing not just a single mechanic in a single Mario spin-off, but Nintendo's entire philosophy of play. Naturally, some people just really hate the damn thing. The original Super Mario Kart was essentially a pure test of skill, rudimentary as it was. The tracks were flat and it approximated the idea of 3D by rotating and scaling the map around the player's kart. The items were mostly recognizable, aside from a few oddities like the Feather to jump over obstacles, and specialized items that would only a...

Petting dogs in games is old news: in boomer shooter Ripout, you can pet your gun

Image
Ripout’s standout feature is not the retro-future 80’s aesthetic. It’s not the excellent gunplay, or the way little aliens that scurry around its industrial spaceships before attaching themselves to bigger aliens and coming to kill you. It’s not the looter shooter aspiration, nor is it the rogue-like setup of its levels. No, it’s the gun. Your gun. Your pet gun. That’s right, your gun is alive – and it’s not something incessant and irritating like your Johnson in Shadows of the Damned, or those endlessly quipping lunatic firearms in High on Life. Your gun is better; more ‘man’s best friend’ than ‘obnoxious bellend’. In Ripout, you wield a little pet alien, resembling something somewhere between a shrunken-down xenomorph and gothic gargoyle, that fires bullets from its maw and snatches body parts off grotesque aliens. And you can pet it, if you feel so obliged. This living weapon is at the center of everything Ripout is doing. The game, a self-confessed boomer shooter from a team of ...

Amazon is reportedly acquiring EA, with an announcement set to drop today

Image
We may be hours away from the biggest news of the week. According to a new report, Amazon is close to announcing a deal to acquire EA later this Friday. The report does not say how much the deal is going to be worth, only that Amazon has officially made an offer. The news comes via a USA Today report, citing sources familiar with the matter. That's pretty much the extent of the information available today, but it's not actually surprising considering recent news. Read more from VG247 Latest Articles Feed https://ift.tt/CTNlGAU via IFTTT

Layers of Fears shares Gamescom trailer, revealing a 'new story chapter'

Image
Bloober Team is back with yet another spine-tingling trainer for the upcoming psychological horror game, Layers of Fears . The game was first announced back in June, but we know a lot more about what to expect when it releases in early 2023 . Bloober Team are certainly no stranger to the genre, having already developed The Medium and Blair Witch, and this time around, the team is developing the Layers of Fear sequel alongside Anshar Studios. Layers of Fears is not a direct sequel to 2016's Layers of Fear or even 2019's Layers of Fear 2. Instead, the new game will be remastering the two titles and DLC to combine them into a single, scary reimagination of the series with new, additional plot lines and Unreal Engine 5 technology. Don’t worry, PS5 price increase isn’t going to affect Xbox

Image
Yesterday, Sony made what's likely to go down as one of the most surprising news of the year, if not the entire console generation. The platform holder announced a price increase for both of its PS5 editions in most regions, except the US. The announcement created a wave of shock amongst fans, not just because of what Sony cited as the reasons behind this unusual decision, but also because of the implications it could have on the wider industry - including rival Xbox. Well, it looks like - for now at least - Microsoft is not contemplating a similar price hike for Xbox Series X or Series S. A Microsoft spokesperson told Windows Central that the prices of both consoles will remain as they are today in USD, EUR, and GBP. The PS5 is getting more expensive

Image
Sony is doing what many thought is unthinkable. The company announced this morning that it's raising the price of PlayStation 5 consoles across a wide range of markets globally. Company president and CEO, Jim Ryan, broke the news this morning on the PlayStation Blog. In the post , Ryan cited high inflation rates and adverse currency trends as the main reasons behind this price hike, calling it "a necessity given the current global economic environment and its impact on SIE’s business." The United States is the only market that will see no price increase, but Canada, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America will get new prices effective immediately. Japan is also getting a price hike, though that will take effect on September 15. Sony did not say whether PS5 accessories, such as the DualSense Controller, will receive a similar hike. "I want it now!" What do hardcore fighting game players think after hands-on with Street Fighter 6?

Image
VsFighting X, the 10th instalment of the UKs biggest fighting game event made its glamorous return this past weekend in the heart of central Birmingham. Walk past all the construction through the doors of the Millenium Point venue and excited crowds of competitors and spectators dominated the space. However, as brilliant as the tournament itself was, one of the most popular attractions was Street Fighter 6 on the 2nd floor. With a crowd of eager players larger than even some of the titles with their own dedicated tournament space, four monitors of the version 1.0 build quickly became a hot spot for every attendee. The game, as you may have noticed if you’ve been following it since its announcement, has a lot of hype around it as all mainline Street Fighter titles have had in the past. While the opinions of many influencers and press outlets are out in the wild — including our own impressions of the game — this was a great opportunity to find out what your typical gamer thinks of t...

Sonic Frontiers ad prematurely reveals November 8 release date out of nowhere

Image
Sonic Frontiers appears to be releasing on November 8 , as per a now-removed ad uploaded to YouTube. It seems that someone behind the scenes was really living that “gotta go fast” mindset — publishing a trailer was ahead of schedule. The upcoming open world Sonic title that we’ve been seeing more and more of over recent months has been receiving a mixed reception from fans since we first laid eyes on it. Although the trailer was swiftly taken down, Sonic fans are some of the quickest out there, meaning a back-up was saved and uploaded to Twitter courtesy of quick-on-the-draw user Shaikh Sehran. In it, we see a brief 30 seconds of Sonic racing through different environments present in the open world, as well as taking on some absolutely massive enemies towering overhead. Yakuza Creator Is Drawing On Tarantino Influences For Next Game

Yakuza creator Toshihiro Nagoshi has revealed more details about his upcoming game, which is currently being developed at his new Nagoshi Studio for NetEase. The veteran developer described the game as a project which doesn't stray too far away from the Yakuza formula and contains plenty of violence, humor, and drama. "It will definitely contain violence as a game element, but I don't want to go too much in the direction of thriller or even horror," Nagoshi said to 4Players (via VGC ). "I want my game to be more like a Quentin Tarantino film, so there can be humor. Something that’s just intimidating or just bloody and brutal doesn't suit my taste. I want a human touch, a bit of silliness and a bit of seriousness, that's what I'm in the mood for at the moment." As for when players can expect to see the game announced, Nagoshi was vague and commented that people will get to see the project revealed "much sooner than other developers would...

Rockstar is taking down prototype Grand Theft Auto videos released by one of the game's creators

Image
Mike Dailly, one of the founding members of the studio that created Grand Theft Auto , seems to have had some prototype videos of the original game taken down by Rockstar . If you aren't familiar with Dailly, he was the first employee at DMA Design , which later became Rockstar North, and went on to make the graphics engine for GTA. Dailly also runs a YouTube channel where he uploads a variety of techy things, including some behind the scenes, early tests of games he worked on, including prototypes of the first GTA, but he's now claimed that Rockstar has filed a takedown on them. Two of the videos that were taken down, as reported by PC Gamer , showed off some renders of prototype graphics developed by Dailly in the early 90s. The first was a rotating, isometric prototype, and the other a top-down one, both of which showed buildings and streets. Another video showed an old beta copy of GTA. Ubisoft Confirms It Isn't Making A Blade Video Game

Ubisoft has confirmed that it won't be making a video game based on Marvel's resident vampire-hunter Blade. News about a potential solo Blade game first hit the rumor mill when YouTuber JorRaptor spotted an Instagram post by actor Edwin Gaffney, which also featured his colleague Alex Martin in the shot. Gaffney posted in the description that he had just wrapped up work, with Ubisoft, mocap, and performance capture hashtags listed below. A second photo showed Gaffney holding a clapperboard that had the production titled "Marvel" and alongside the image of him holding a sword prop, Joraptor released a video where he speculated that Ubisoft was working on a Marvel game. With that theory out in the wild, Ubisoft squashed the rumors with a tweet today. "Sorry to slice up the rumors, we're not making a Blade game but we can't wait to see what our friends at Marvel Studios are cooking up for next year's movie," Ubisoft tweeted . Sorry to slice up...

Death Stranding's launch on PC Game Pass did not involve Sony

Image
Just last week, rumours were confirmed to be true when it was officially revealed that Death Stranding will be soon arriving on PC Game Pass. So soon, in fact, that subscribers will be able to install and play the game tomorrow, August 23. Sony has since gone on to share a statement with PushSquare , stating that "Matters relating to the PC release of Death Stranding are managed by Kojima Productions and 505 Games," and that “[Sony Interactive Entertainment] has no involvement in this promotion.” In case you didn't already know, Sony owns and funded Death Stranding. This certainly is far from the first and last time that a Sony title has made its way onto Game Pass, but this is one of the rare occasions in which many of us are left asking exactly how Kojima Productions and 505 brought Death Stranding to the rival subscription service. Sega is adapting two of its cult-classic titles into films

Image
Sega isn't stopping at Sonic when it comes to making movies, as adaptations of two of its more niche titles are in the works. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter , Sega and media company Picturestart are teaming up to produce adaptations of music video game Space Channel 5 and beat 'em up Comix Zone . According to the report, the adaptation of Space Channel 5, now seemingly just called Channel 5, will be a comedy/ dance take on the game, which all apparently "tell the story of a hapless fast-food worker who is recruited by a freedom reporter from the future to save the world from aliens using the one thing that unites all people on the planet: our love of silly viral dances." Bioshock Infinite Turns American Religious History Into A Nonsensical Nightmare

BioShock is celebrating its 15-year anniversary today, August 21, 2022. Below, we take a look at how the religious commentary in its sequel, BioShock Infinite, lacks the sharpness it needs to resonate. Playing BioShock Infinite at launch, several things stuck in my mind as a young Mormon. Zachary Hale Comstock, the game’s principal villain and cult leader, is a kind of Brigham Young: a fiery prophet, claiming visions and prophecies while he grasps at power. His floating metropolis of Columbia is a kind of Salt Lake City: a grim capital on the cloud, both a refuge and a prison. Though the game is drawing on a melting pot of historical and fictional inspirations, these parallels have kicked around in my mind for nearly 10 years. Creative director Ken Levine even named Joseph Smith and Brigham Young as inspirations for Comstock in an interview back in 2013 . To the game's credit, these are touchstones rather than full-on parallels. In turn, though, the depiction of Comstock and his r...
